Why yellowjackets are the species that matters here
Among the wasps around a Saint Paul home, yellowjackets account for most of the stings and nearly all of the serious incidents, for one structural reason: their nests are hidden. University of Minnesota Extension puts a peak colony at up to approximately 5,000 wasps, and none of those are visible from your yard. What you see is a hole. The hole might be in a lawn, a slope, a mulch bed, a stone wall, or a seam where siding meets a soffit. Because there is no visible nest, people mow over ground colonies and lean ladders against wall colonies without knowing anything is there. The colony responds to vibration at the nest, not to your intentions. Compare that to a paper wasp comb, which caps out near 100 wasps and hangs in plain sight. You can see it, count the adults, and decide whether to bother. That visibility, more than temperament, is what separates a nuisance from a hazard, and it should drive how you handle each one.
One summer, start to finish: the Minnesota wasp calendar
April and May: mated queens come out of overwintering shelter and each starts a nest alone. Colonies are one insect and a few cells. Anything you remove now costs nothing and prevents everything downstream. June and July: the first workers emerge and take over foraging while the queen lays. The colony grows fast but stays quiet, hunting caterpillars and flies rather than visiting your picnic. Most people have no idea a nest exists on the property. Late July through August: numbers climb toward maximum. University of Minnesota Extension notes that yellowjacket populations peak during late summer, and that is when the calls start. September: colonies stay large but production of workers stops, and new queens leave to mate and find shelter. Foragers are most visible around food and trash. October onward: freezing temperatures in the mid to upper 20s kill the old queen and the workers. In Saint Paul that happens on schedule, and the nest goes empty for good.
Ground nests and the stings nobody sees coming
The most common serious wasp incident is not someone poking a nest. It is someone running a mower, a string trimmer, or a rototiller over a hole they did not know was there. Vibration transmitted into the soil reads to the colony as an attack on the nest, and a large yellowjacket colony can put a great many workers into the air within seconds. The CDC data lines up with this. Of the 788 sting deaths recorded nationally between 2011 and 2021, 84 percent were men, matching the profile of yard work, roofing, and outdoor labor rather than casual outdoor dining. The hazard is occupational as much as recreational. Protecting yourself is mostly about looking first. Before the first mow of August, walk the yard slowly and watch for a spot where wasps consistently enter and leave the ground. Mark it from a safe distance with a stake or a flag, then keep equipment well clear until it has been treated at night. If you are stung and cannot see where they came from, stop working and leave the area rather than searching.
What a wasp removal visit should cover
Expect the person who shows up to look at the whole property, not just the spot you pointed to. Nests cluster: several paper wasp combs on one house is common, and a bald-faced hornet nest in a shrub is easy to miss until someone is looking for it deliberately. Eaves, dormers, porch ceilings, rails, vents, hollow columns, foundation edges, and low shrubs are the standard checklist. Timing should come up in the conversation. Effective treatment happens after dark or at first light, when foragers are home. A midday treatment kills the wasps present and leaves a shift of returning workers to mill around the treated spot for days. Ask what happens after. For a hidden nest, the sequence is treat, wait, confirm no traffic, then seal. Skipping the confirmation step is how people end up with wasps coming through a bedroom ceiling. Also ask whether removing the nest body is included, since for aerial nests some companies treat and leave the shell in place to weather away.
Prevention that actually works on an older home
Saint Paul's residential streets carry a lot of older houses with deep eaves, porches, dormers, and painted wood trim, and that architecture gives wasps far more sheltered corners than a new build does. Prevention here is mostly about closing openings before May. Start with vents. Soffit, gable, and attic vents that have lost their screening are open doors to a wall or attic void, and fine mesh over them is the single highest-value fix. Move on to trim: where wood has shrunk away from siding or where a porch roof meets the wall, caulk the gaps. Check hollow porch railings and open pipe ends, which European paper wasps use readily. Then work the yard. Old rodent burrows along a foundation or under a step become yellowjacket nests, so fill them in spring. Keep shrubs thinned enough that you can see into them before you reach in with hedge shears in July. None of this is glamorous, and all of it is cheaper than an August nest removal.
Who has the real risk: allergy and stings
Wasp risk is not evenly distributed. For most people a sting means an hour of sharp pain and a day of swelling. For a small group it is an emergency, and knowing which group you belong to changes every decision on this page. The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology puts potentially life-threatening reactions to insect venom at 0.4 to 0.8 percent of children and about 3 percent of adults, so the risk actually rises with age rather than falling. The University of Kentucky estimates roughly two million Americans are hypersensitive to stinging insect venom, which works out to about one household in a hundred containing someone for whom a single sting is serious. If you have reacted badly before, talk to a doctor about carrying epinephrine and about whether venom immunotherapy makes sense for you. In the meantime, treat nest removal as something to delegate rather than attempt, and make sure other people in the house know where the emergency medication is kept.
