Identifying Minnesota wasps by size and nest shape
Two glances usually settle it: one at the insect, one at the nest. University of Minnesota Extension gives useful measurements. Yellowjackets run three eighths to five eighths of an inch, short and stout with crisp yellow and black banding. Bald-faced hornets are larger at about seven eighths of an inch, black with ivory markings on the face and abdomen tip. Paper wasps measure a half inch to a full inch, slimmer, with a pinched waist and long legs that trail behind them in flight. The nest is faster still. An open comb with visible cells hanging from a short stalk is a paper wasp. A smooth gray ball wrapped in layered paper with one hole near the bottom is a bald-faced hornet. No visible nest at all, just traffic into a hole in the lawn or a siding seam, means yellowjackets. One more case turns up on Minnesota decks: a comb built inside a hollow rail end or a grill frame. That is usually the European paper wasp, which nests in cavities rather than out in the open, and it needs the cavity capped after treatment.
What a colony of 5,000 wasps actually means
University of Minnesota Extension reports that a yellowjacket colony peaks in late summer at up to roughly 5,000 wasps. That figure is easy to read past, so it helps to translate it. At that size, a colony's guard force alone outnumbers everything you would find on a paper wasp comb. The defended radius extends several yards from the entrance rather than a few feet. A vibration from a mower, a shovel, or footsteps on the ground above triggers a response from hundreds of insects at once, not one or two. It also explains the physical space. A colony that large has been excavating soil or expanding into a wall cavity all summer, which is why homeowners who open a wall in September find comb filling an entire stud bay. And it explains the injury pattern. Multiple stings in one incident are normal with a mature yellowjacket colony, and for someone with venom sensitivity, multiple stings compress the timeline of a reaction badly. The practical conclusion is simple. Any decision about a hidden nest in August or September should assume the colony is at the large end, because from outside there is no way to know it is not.
The temperature that ends the Minnesota wasp season
Minnesota gets a definitive answer to a question most states can only estimate. University of Minnesota Extension states that nests die when freezing temperatures, usually in the mid to upper 20s, kill the old queen and the workers, and that queens are the only members of the colony that survive the winter. That gives you a usable planning rule. Once overnight lows are reliably hitting that range, an untouched colony is finished within days, and the paper nest it leaves behind is never reoccupied. So for a nest high in a tree at the back of the yard, checking the forecast is a legitimate strategy and costs nothing. For a nest over the back steps, it is not, because the intervening weeks are exactly when the colony holds its maximum worker count. The rule also settles a common question about old nests. A gray nest hanging in a bare tree in December contains nothing alive. It can come down whenever it is convenient, or be left to break apart on its own. The queens, meanwhile, are elsewhere, tucked under loose bark, in woodpiles, and in sheltered cavities, waiting for April.
Where nests turn up on Minnesota properties
Nests are not distributed randomly. They cluster in a handful of predictable spots, and knowing the list turns an anxious search into a ten-minute walk. On the house: soffit and fascia gaps, gable and ridge vents, siding seams, and the openings where the dryer vent, hose bib, and electrical service pass through the wall. Any of these can lead to a wall-void colony. On the deck and porch: the undersides of rails, the ceiling of a covered porch, the backs of shutters, and hollow rail ends and post caps. Grill frames belong on this list too, and they are the reason so many nests get discovered on a Saturday afternoon in July. In the yard: abandoned rodent burrows along foundations, under landscape timbers, at the edges of garden beds, and beside fence posts. These are the ground colonies, and they are found by mower rather than by eye. At a lake place: dock boxes, boat covers, canoe racks, sauna eaves, and outbuilding doorframes, all of which sat undisturbed while a queen was choosing a site in May. Who should never be the one treating a nest
Some of this decision has nothing to do with the nest and everything to do with the person holding the can. The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology reports that potentially life-threatening reactions to insect venom affect roughly 3 percent of adults and between 0.4 and 0.8 percent of children, and that after one allergic reaction the chance of a similar or worse one is 60 percent. Anybody in that group should not be near an active nest, let alone treating it. University of Kentucky entomologists estimate about two million Americans are hypersensitive to stinging insect venom, roughly one percent of the population. That is about one household in a hundred with someone for whom a single sting is a medical emergency. Age and mobility matter too. Treating a nest safely depends on being able to leave the area quickly in the dark, which rules out anyone unsteady on a ladder or slow on uneven ground. And nobody should do this alone in a remote spot. If you are treating a nest at a cabin an hour from the nearest hospital, have someone with you and know where the epinephrine is.
