They look similar enough that most people never separate them, but where they nest is what matters to you. The Eastern is the ground nester. Nothing is visible from above except a hole with traffic. The German is the structural one. It has a long record of nesting inside wall voids, attics, and crawl spaces, entering through a siding seam or a torn vent screen. This is the species behind the classic complaint of wasps appearing on the inside of a second floor window with no obvious source. The Common yellowjacket splits the difference, using ground cavities and sheltered structural voids alike. All three follow the same calendar, and all three reach the 4,000 to 5,000 worker scale OSU documents by the end of summer. An Ohio wasp calendar, April to first frost
April and early May belong to the queens. Ohio State describes fertilized queens emerging during the warm days of April and early May, each one starting a nest alone and raising the first handful of workers herself. A nest at this stage is a few dozen cells and no defenders worth the name. June and July are quiet expansion. Workers take over foraging and building, and the comb grows fast on a diet of caterpillars and flies. Homeowners rarely notice anything, which is unfortunate, since this is the last easy window. August through October is the season people actually experience. The colony hits peak worker numbers, the entrance is guarded around the clock, and food preferences swing from proteins to sweets. Warm, humid conditions and close to 39 inches of annual rain keep the food supply going right through the peak. The end comes with sustained cold. Workers and the old queen die, only newly mated queens survive tucked into sheltered spots, and the nest is abandoned for good. Nothing reoccupies that comb the following year.
Older Ohio houses and why yellowjackets like them
Housing stock is the quiet variable in every wall nest story. Median home values across Ohio cities sit near $140,000, which reflects a large share of older frame construction in the neighborhoods where these calls come from. Older houses tend to have wood soffits rather than sealed vinyl, open wall cavities rather than dense modern insulation, and decades of settling that has opened seams at corner boards and window trim. A German yellowjacket queen in April is shopping for exactly that: a dry, dark, protected cavity with a small entrance she can defend. A quarter inch gap where siding meets a trim board is more than enough. Once she is in, the void offers uninterrupted space for a comb that may end up the size of a basketball. Humidity around 71 percent adds a second wrinkle. Damp conditions soften weathered trim and rot the wood around gutter leaks and failed flashing, quietly widening the gaps that let a queen in. Walking the perimeter in April with a caulk gun is dull work that prevents an expensive August.
What a treatment visit should look like
The first useful thing a technician does is stand still and watch. Foragers reveal the true entry point, which on a soffit job is often several feet from where you assumed. That observation determines whether the answer is a dust, an injected liquid, a ladder, or a drill. Timing should be dusk or after dark. Foragers are home, the colony is calmer in low light, and a dust applied at the opening gets spread through the comb by wasps walking over it overnight. Daytime treatment of a large hidden colony leaves a good share of the workers out in the field. The entrance is deliberately left open afterward. Traffic dwindles over several days as returning foragers pick up product, and sealing too early is what drives wasps inward. Ask when the technician recommends closing the gap, and whether they come back to do it. Before anyone leaves, get the product name, the applicator license number, and a plain statement of what triggers a free return visit and how long that window lasts.
Renters, landlords, and nests inside the building
A nest inside a wall, soffit, attic, or porch roof is part of the building, so in most Ohio rentals it belongs to the owner rather than the tenant. Report it in writing. Say which side of the building it is on, describe where you see wasps entering, note how close the spot is to an entry door or a shared walkway, and state clearly if anyone in the unit has a sting allergy. Speed helps both sides. A colony handled in June is one application at one opening. The same colony in late September has thousands of workers behind the sheathing, a large comb to deal with, and a much better chance of breaking through interior finishes. For duplexes and small apartment buildings, ask whether the quote covers every active opening found on the structure or only the one that was reported. Older Ohio buildings frequently have more than one, and paying twice in the same season is a common outcome of a narrow first quote.
Comparing two quotes for the same nest
When two companies quote very different numbers for one wasp job, they are usually not proposing the same work. Ask both the same short list and the gap explains itself. What exactly gets treated, the visible activity or the void behind it? Is the old comb removed, and is that in the price? Does anyone come back to seal the entry after the colony dies? What is the return policy if wasps are still flying in a week, and how long does it last? Is there a charge for the inspection, and does it come off the treatment? Ask for the answers on paper with the product named. A company treating an Ohio wall void should say plainly which dust goes into the gap and where. Vagueness here is a signal. Verify the license through the state pesticide agency listings that the EPA and the National Pesticide Information Center both maintain. Then ask about scheduling, because in the busy August to October stretch, availability is part of the real price.
