Why Columbus wasps turn into a problem in August
For most of the summer a yellowjacket colony has nothing to do with you. Understanding why that changes explains the whole shape of the season. From May through July, the workers are essentially nannies. They hunt caterpillars, flies, and other soft insects, chew them into a paste, and feed the larvae. In exchange the larvae secrete a sugary droplet the adults drink. It is a closed loop, and the colony never needs your picnic. Ohio State Extension describes the turn: in the late summer, from August to October, food preferences change from proteins to sweets. The queen stops producing worker brood, the larvae disappear, and the sugar supply the adults depended on dries up. Thousands of workers now have no job and no food source, and they go looking. That is when a nest of four to five thousand wasps becomes visible to the neighborhood at once. It is also why prevention advice shifts in late July from sealing gaps to managing trash, drinks, and fallen fruit. The colony did not grow overnight; its interests changed.
How big a Columbus nest actually gets
People tend to underestimate a nest they cannot see, so the numbers are worth stating plainly. Ohio State Extension reports that by August and late September, a yellowjacket nest in this state holds approximately 4,000 to 5,000 workers, built out across 10,000 to 15,000 cells. Cells outnumber workers because each cell gets reused for successive broods over the season, so the cell count is really a record of everything the colony has produced. All of that starts with one insect. A queen that overwintered under loose bark or in a shed emerges during the warm days of April and early May, picks a cavity, and builds a comb of a couple dozen cells by herself. She forages, lays, and feeds the first brood alone. The growth is exponential once workers take over foraging, which is why the same nest is trivial in May and serious in September. It is also why the single most effective thing a Columbus homeowner can do costs nothing: walk the eaves in the first warm week of spring and knock down anything that looks like a tiny gray shower head.
The nest inside a Columbus wall
German yellowjackets are the reason a wasp problem sometimes becomes a construction problem. Ohio State lists the German yellowjacket among the state's main species, and unlike its soil-nesting relatives it prefers structural voids. A queen gets in through a gap where trim has shrunk away from siding, a torn gable vent screen, or the seam where the soffit meets the fascia board. From there she is inside a wall cavity with excellent insulation and no predators. The problem is that you cannot assess it. There is no way to tell from a hole in the siding whether the comb hangs two feet in or eight, or how many thousand wasps are on it. Meanwhile a colony that fills its cavity chews outward through whatever is thinnest, and interior drywall is thinner than exterior sheathing. Two rules follow. Never plug the entrance while the colony is alive, and never spray a foaming product into a wall from outside. Both push wasps into the living space rather than killing them where they are.
Renters, landlords, and rental housing near campus
A nest inside the building shell is normally the landlord's expense, because the wasps got in through a defect in the structure: a torn vent screen, a soffit gap, siding that has pulled away from trim. Those are maintenance items rather than tenant housekeeping. A comb on a porch chair or a patio umbrella the tenant owns is a fairer thing for the tenant to deal with, and a small paper wasp nest is genuinely manageable. Columbus has a large stock of older rental houses, many of them divided into units, and in those buildings a wall-void colony can affect several tenants at once through shared framing. Report it in writing on the day you notice it, naming the exact location, the entry point, roughly how many wasps a minute you count, and whether anyone in the unit has a sting allergy. That last line matters, since the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology reports a 60 percent chance of a similar or worse reaction for someone who has already had one. Do not drill or foam into a wall in a rental. That is damage you may be billed for.
Cicada killers, hornets, and the wasps that are not the problem
Not everything large and striped in a Columbus yard needs treating, and a fair amount of money gets spent on insects that were never a threat. The cicada killer is the biggest offender. Nearly two inches long, it digs individual burrows in thin, sunny lawn during midsummer and leaves little mounds of excavated soil behind. It is solitary, so there is no colony and no defended nest. Females sting only if handled, and the males that dive at your head, which is the behavior that alarms everyone, have no stinger at all. Thickening the turf discourages them more effectively than any spray. Mud daubers are the second. They build small mud tubes under carports and shed eaves, they hunt spiders, and they are about as close to harmless as a wasp gets. Knock the tubes down with a hose and they are gone. Even bald-faced hornets deserve a second look before you act. A gray globe forty feet up a tree at the back of a lot poses almost no risk, and with a Columbus winter it will be dead by the end of the season anyway.
What to ask before you accept a quote
Two prices rarely describe the same job, so put the quotes side by side on scope rather than on the number at the bottom. Start with what is covered: only the nest you pointed at, or a walkthrough of the structure with any other colonies found included. On older Columbus houses with wood soffits and mature trees, a second nest is a realistic possibility. Then ask whether nest removal is in the price. Killing a wall colony and physically extracting the paper are separate labor, and a large dead nest left in place can stain a ceiling and attract carpet beetles as it decomposes. Then ask about the callback in plain words. If wasps use that same opening again in two weeks, does someone return, at what cost, and for how long does that hold. Then ask when they plan to treat. A proposal to hit an active nest at noon is a signal about how carefully the company works, since the right time is dusk or after dark when the colony is home.
