Early April is mostly quiet. Overwintered queens are still sheltering in bark, siding gaps, and wall insulation, and there is no colony to speak of. By late April and early May, warm days pull queens out to hunt for nest sites. Each queen is building alone, so a nest at this stage is a handful of cells you could remove with a broom handle. Almost nobody looks, which is why this window gets wasted. June and July are quiet growth. Workers are hunting caterpillars for the brood and have no interest in your food, so a colony can get well established without anyone noticing. August through October is the peak, and it is when the diet shifts from protein to sugar. Distance is the variable that matters most in judging urgency, and it is the one people most often discount because the nest looks small. A colony treats a zone around its entrance as defended territory, and that zone grows as the nest grows. A nest ten feet up a tree at the back of a lot can be watched all season. The same nest above a stoop, beside a stair rail, or in the frame of a screen door means every trip in and out passes through defended space, sometimes carrying groceries, sometimes at night, sometimes with a child running ahead. Ground nests and the September mowing problem

Ask whether a return visit is included if wasps are still flying a week later, since hidden colonies sometimes need a second application. Sting reactions: what to watch in the first thirty minutes
Knowing the difference between a normal reaction and a dangerous one changes what you do next, and it is worth reading before you need it. A normal sting produces sharp pain, redness, and swelling at the site that peaks within a day or so. A large local reaction can swell an entire limb and looks alarming without being an emergency. What matters is whether the reaction shows up away from the sting: hives on other parts of the body, swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, tightness in the chest, wheezing, dizziness, nausea, or a sense that something is badly wrong.
