The first workers take over the hunting and the construction while the queen concentrates on laying, and with humidity around 71 percent and roughly 50 inches of annual rain, prey insects are never in short supply. Nothing about this stage draws attention. August is the number Clemson puts a figure on: colonies may reach several hundred workers. That is when the nest becomes a real presence in a yard, with a guarded entrance and constant traffic. Fall brings decline for most colonies. Workers die off, the founding queen dies, and newly fertilized queens leave to overwinter in sheltered spots. In the coldest parts of the state that ends the story cleanly. Closer to the coast, where winter lows average near 36F, it sometimes does not.
Raised foundations, crawl spaces, and where colonies hide
Construction style has a lot to do with where South Carolina wasps end up. Coastal and lowcountry houses are frequently raised, with vented crawl spaces underneath, while inland neighborhoods run more toward slab construction. Both give a queen options, but different ones. A raised house offers a dark, ventilated void directly beneath the living space, with screened vents that lose their screening over time and framing that stays damp in a humid climate. Who seals the entry once the colony is dead, and does that require another trip? What happens if wasps are still active a week later, and how long does that commitment run? Is there an inspection fee, and does it come off the treatment? Add one question that is specific to this state: what happens if the nest turns out to be far larger than expected.
