Why a dry Seattle summer concentrates wasps in your yard
Seattle's reputation for rain is earned, but the rain arrives in the wrong half of the year for wasp control. Of the roughly 38 inches that fall in a year, very little lands between June and September. By the time a colony is large enough to need serious resources, the surrounding landscape has dried out. wasps need water for themselves and, more importantly, to cool the nest in warm weather, carrying droplets back and evaporating them inside the comb. That is why the visible complaints in August are so often about water rather than food. A birdbath, a leaking hose bib, a slow drip emitter, a pet bowl on a back step, or the wet ring around a sprinkler head becomes the most reliable moisture on the block, and foragers return to it constantly. The practical response is unglamorous and effective. Fix the leaks, move the pet bowl inside during the afternoon, and empty standing water you do not need. It will not kill a colony, but it stops your yard from being the neighborhood's water station, and that alone reduces the wasps you see day to day.

Seattle residents still ask about the northern giant hornet, and the answer is genuinely good news. USDA APHIS reports that the species first captured national attention in late 2019 when it was detected near Blaine, and that it has since been eradicated from Washington State and the United States. Four nests were located and destroyed between 2020 and 2021. That was an unusually successful outcome for an invasive insect response. The part worth carrying forward is how it happened. Nearly half of the confirmed detections came from public reports rather than agency traps. Ordinary people photographing an unusually large insect drove the search, and that reporting habit is still the backbone of the state's surveillance. So if you see something you think might be one, the right move is to photograph it from a distance and report it to the state agriculture department, which maintains identification and sighting pages. Do not treat it yourself and do not assume it is nothing. In practice, almost every large wasp reported in Seattle turns out to be a bald-faced hornet or a queen yellowjacket in spring.
Nests in a Seattle roofline
The most common structural wasp job in this city involves the strip where the roof meets the wall. Older Seattle houses tend to have wood soffits, open eave returns, and gable vents that have been in place for decades. Wood shrinks and cups over time, and where the soffit board pulls away from the fascia it leaves a slot about the width of a pencil. That is more than a German yellowjacket queen needs, and behind it lies an enormous, undisturbed cavity. The same applies to anyone working alone on a ladder and anyone who cannot move quickly. A defensive colony does not give you time to reconsider, and stings and falls compound each other.
A season plan for a Seattle property
Because colonies here are annual, a little timing beats a lot of product. March and April: hang lure traps for queens, walk the perimeter with binoculars, look at the roofline, and fill any rodent burrows near the foundation. This is the free part of the year. May and June: check eaves, deck framing, carports, hollow rails, and grill lids for starter combs. A nest at this stage is one queen and a couple dozen cells, and a broom handles it in the cool of a morning. July: switch attention to water and waste. Fix the drips, latch the bins, and rinse recycling before it goes out. August and September: this is the observation window. Watch for consistent flight lines into the ground or the roofline. Finding a hidden nest now, before someone stumbles into it, is the whole game. October: treat anything near a door, deck, or walkway. A nest high in a tree at the back of the lot can be left to finish on its own, since the colony dies out and the paper is never reused.
