Why wet ground makes Portland nests harder to see
The ground nest problem is worse in a rainy climate, and the reason has nothing to do with the wasps preferring rain. Beds fill in, ground cover spreads, ivy runs along fence lines, and by midsummer a burrow entrance the width of a quarter can be completely screened by foliage.
