The four wasps you are likely to meet in Maine
Knowing which insect you have decides everything else, because the four species reported in Maine build in four different places. Native paper wasps make the open, stalked comb under eaves, porch ceilings, and deck rails. You can see straight into the cells. Colonies stay small and the wasps only defend the comb itself, which is why this is the one nest a careful homeowner sometimes handles. The European paper wasp looks similar but picks enclosed spaces: hollow rails, grill frames, mailbox posts, and the tracks of storm windows. It arrived in North America decades ago and has spread across the country, and its habit of nesting inside things is why people find it by accident. Bald-faced hornets build the gray enclosed ball with one entrance near the bottom. Penn State reports their range across most of the lower 48. They defend a much wider radius than paper wasps. The European hornet is the outlier: large, brown and yellow, nesting in hollow trees and wall voids, and foraging after dark toward lit windows. That last habit makes night treatment less straightforward and pushes it firmly into professional territory.
A short season that concentrates the danger
Maine's wasp calendar is squeezed at both ends, and the squeeze is the whole story. Queens do not emerge until the ground warms in April or May. Each one builds a small comb alone, lays eggs, and raises the first workers by herself. Through that stretch, a nest is a handful of cells and a single insect, and a bump with a broom handle ends it. From June the workers take over and the colony compounds. With a median summer high near 79 degrees, foraging days are shorter and cooler than in the mid-Atlantic, so Maine colonies have less time to reach size. They compensate by peaking hard: August through October is when nearly all the workers a colony will ever have are alive at once. That is why a nest that looked manageable in July can feel alarming by Labor Day, and why the same nest is more expensive to treat in September than in June. The end is abrupt. The first hard frosts kill workers and the founding queen. Only the newly mated queens survive, and they do not return to the old nest.
Ground, aerial, and wall nests are three different jobs
People ask what wasp removal costs as though it were one service. It is at least three. A ground nest is treated at the opening, usually with a dust, after dark. The difficulty is that the tunnel may run well back from the visible hole and Maine's damp soil can pack around it, so a second application is not unusual. Nothing about a ground nest is judgeable from the surface, which is precisely the hazard. An aerial nest is priced mostly by height and footing. A hornet nest under a first-story eave is straightforward. The same nest twenty-five feet up over sloped ground is a different job, and if it is far from where people walk, the honest recommendation is often to wait for freezing weather. A wall or attic nest is the most involved. The comb sits somewhere inside a cavity you cannot see, treatment has to reach it rather than the exterior gap, and confirming the colony is dead takes a return visit. Then the opening has to be sealed, which on older wood-framed Maine houses may mean actual carpentry rather than a bead of caulk.
Sting allergy: the numbers worth knowing first
The reason wasp work gets treated as a safety decision rather than a chore comes down to a handful of published figures. The CDC's review of national death records found 788 deaths from hornet, wasp, and bee stings in the United States between 2011 and 2021, an average of about 72 a year. Eighty-four percent of those deaths were male, which tracks closely with who is mowing, roofing, and clearing brush when a hidden nest gets hit. University of Kentucky entomologists estimate roughly two million Americans are hypersensitive to stinging insect venom, about one percent of the population. That works out to something like one household in a hundred containing a person for whom a single sting is a medical emergency. The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology adds the figure that should settle any argument about doing it yourself: after one allergic reaction to a sting, the chance of a similar or worse reaction next time is 60 percent. Prevention that fits older wood-framed houses
Prevention works far better than treatment, and in Maine it is mostly about closing the openings that a queen inspects in spring. Start in early May with a slow walk around the house. Look under every eave, deck rail, porch ceiling, and shutter for a comb the size of a quarter. At that stage there is one wasp on it and no colony to defend it. Then close the cavities. Screen soffit, gable, and ridge vents. Cap hollow rail ends and fence posts, which the European paper wasp treats as pre-built nest sites. Check where the dryer vent, hose bib, and electrical service enter the wall, because that gap is a doorway into a stud bay. Fill abandoned rodent burrows along the foundation before the ground warms, since those are what a ground-nesting yellowjacket queen actually wants. Late in the season the job changes to food. From August on, keep trash lids latched, rinse recycling, and pick up windfall apples. Stack firewood away from the house, since overwintering queens shelter under bark.
