The wasp that showed up in Boston in 1978
Massachusetts has a small footnote in North American entomology. Penn State records that the European paper wasp was first reported on this continent around Boston in 1978, and from there it spread until it reached the West Coast. That history matters practically because this species behaves differently from the native paper wasps people expect. It carries yellowjacket-style black and yellow banding, which fools most homeowners into assuming a ground nest is somewhere nearby. Its antennae are orange, which is the quickest field mark once you know to look. More importantly, it nests in enclosed cavities rather than hanging an open comb in plain sight. Downspouts, open pipe ends, mailboxes, grill frames, patio furniture tubing, and electrical boxes are all fair game. That is how a nest ends up somewhere you put your hand. Colonies stay small, comparable to native paper wasps, so a single nest is not a mass-stinging risk. The problem is location. A comb inside a gate post or a barbecue frame gets disturbed by ordinary use, and people get stung doing something they have done a hundred times.

The northern season is short enough to describe precisely, and knowing the shape of it tells you when action is cheap. April into early May: overwintered queens come out and search for cavities. There is no colony, just one insect and a few cells. A nest destroyed now costs nothing and prevents the entire summer. Mid May through June: the queen raises the first workers alone. The nest is small and easy to miss, and the wasps are entirely uninterested in people. July: the colony scales. Workers take over foraging, the queen only lays, and growth accelerates sharply. This is when most homeowners first notice traffic. August and September: peak. Nests reach maximum size, defense radius widens, and workers begin scavenging for sugar and protein rather than hunting insects. Nearly every sting incident of the year happens now. October into November: decline. As nights drop toward freezing the colony falls apart, and once temperatures reach the mid to upper 20s the workers and the old queen die. Only new queens make it through.
Why cavities are the real issue in an old-built city
wasps do not chew their way into a building the way carpenter bees do. They find an opening that already exists, and a queen only needs a gap about the width of a pencil. A blocked colony does not give up, it looks for a second exit, and interior finish is easier to chew than exterior wood.

Traffic converging on one point identifies the entrance, and the direction wasps travel inside suggests whether the nest is in soil, a void, or an attic. Timing is next. Treatment is scheduled for dusk or after dark, when foragers have returned and the colony is quiet. Daytime application kills the workers that happen to be home and leaves the rest to rebuild. The application itself is a dust puffed into the opening, not a stream of liquid sprayed at the wall. Returning workers walk through it and carry it to the brood, which is what reaches a nest nobody can see. Then you wait. Traffic drops within a day or two, and stragglers keep returning to a dead nest for several days. That is expected. Sealing happens after the entrance has been quiet, not before.
Renters, owners, and nests on shared buildings
Boston has a lot of multi-unit housing, and a wasp nest on a shared building creates a question about who acts before it creates a question about who pays. The general principle is that a nest built into the structure, whether in a wall, cornice, soffit, or common stairwell, is a building issue rather than tenant housekeeping. Frame it as a safety issue, because it is one. The case for treating comes down to three things: location, exposure, and time remaining. A bald-faced hornet nest thirty feet up a tree at the back of a lot can be left alone to fail on its own. A yellowjacket colony in the wall beside a front door cannot, because six more weeks of ordinary comings and goings is six weeks of opportunity for someone to be stung. Allergy settles it. If anyone in the household has had a systemic reaction, waiting is not a reasonable option at any point in the season. Otherwise, judge by how close the nest is to where people actually walk.
